A Perfect Pair

Two children brings a whole new dynamic. You're no longer just a couple with a kid - you're well and truly a family.

In the early days, your oldest child is the centre of your world. Everything they say or do is incredible, you secretly think they're a genius, and almost certainly the cutest kid who has ever lived. They fill your whole life and most of your days. 

Then your second child is due, and you’re torn between loving them desperately and longing to meet them, and grieving for your first child who will no longer be your everything.

Your second child arrives, and everything is new all over again. You adjust to this new family, juggling an older sibling while being plunged back into those newborn days. Your children become friends with each other, and your family has this feeling of solidity and permanence.

You thought once that your heart was full to bursting with the love you had for your first child, and wondered how you could fit another. Now that they are here, and your heart has adjusted to a new expanded fit, you wonder how you could have ever found life complete without them.

Double the chaos, double the busy-ness - and double the love.

Life is a juggle. You're pulled in so many different directions at once. Some days you're literally having your arms pulled by four little hands all at the same time. Your arms and your lap and your schedule have never been so full - but neither has your heart. 

You feel like you never get to give each of your children the individual attention they deserve. Each of them has such a special place in your heart - each of them so unique, and special in their own way, and even though you have the same overarching motherly love for them both, you have a special relationship with each and you love them each in different ways too. 

When was the last time you really sat down and thought about how perfect each of them is? When was the last time you stopped and thought about what it is that makes each of them special, of all those unique things you love - and the unique things about your relationship with them that you don't have with your other child?
